Weigle, Weynand Lead Bobcats Past Rams

KINGSTON, R.I. - Amy Weigle had 12 kills with only two errors for a .455 hitting percentage, and Jessica Weynand added a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs as Texas State opened day one at the Rhode Island Ram Classic with a 3-0 sweep (30-20, 30-26, 30-19) of the host Rams.

Up by only a point in game one at 18-17, the Bobcats (4-5) used a 12-3 run to close out the game and gain momentum heading into game two.

Texas State then scored the first eight points of the second frame and looked to be in control, but Rhode Island (6-4) staged a 12-5 rally to close within a point at 13-12. The 'Cats responded by stretching the lead back out to nine at 26-19, and URI would get no closer than 28-25 as Texas State took game two 30-26.

In game three, Brittany Collins served nine straight points, including a pair of aces, to give the Bobcats a comfortable 15-5 lead in the deciding frame, and Texas State would hold on for the sweep.

Texas State hit .225 for the match while holding the Rams to a paltry .009 attack percentage, as URI finished with 26 kills but 25 errors as a team.

Kacey Wimpy added 21 digs for the Bobcats while Shelbi Irvin had 21 assists. Collins chipped in with 19 assists of her own and finished with a season-high four aces.

Caitlyn Welsh led the Rams with eight kills while Kayla Newberg added seven, but the rest of the URI attack combined for only 11 kills and a -.125 attack percentage.
