SAN MARCOS -
A lightning delay coupled with an aggressive Utah State attack overshadowed tremendous fan support at the Bobcat soccer team's home opener as Texas State kicked off its 2007 season with a 1-0 loss on Friday.
The lone goal of the match came in the 28th minute when Aggie midfielder Dana Peart found herself one-on-one with Bobcat goalkeeper Mandi Mawyer on a pass by Lindsey Smart and found the right side of the net.
Texas State searched for an equalizer in the second half but couldn't break through despite four solid shots on goal. The Bobcats also had to stop their search and clear the field in the 79th minute due to lightning in the area, but after a 30 minute delay play resumed.
Despite being outshot 14-4 for the match, the Bobcats still had one last gasp to tie it in the final five minutes, but Rikki Padia's corner kick came up empty.
Padia was one of four different Bobcats to record a shot on goal, while Mawyer made three saves while playing all 90 minutes.
The `Cats return to action on Sunday, Sept. 2, with a trip up I-35 to Waco for a 1 p.m. match against the Baylor Bears.
