DENTON - Emily Jones set a career high with 14 kills and hit a blistering .545 for the match, but it was not enough to pull out a win as Texas State fell to Georgia State 3-1 (27-30, 27-30, 30-28, 26-30) in the first match of the Mean Green Volleyball Classic on Friday.

The Bobcats (0-2) can still pull even for the day with a 7 p.m. match against host North Texas (0-3), who took on UMKC in other first day action.

Texas State looked to have the early momentum, taking a 22-17 lead in game one on a Brittany Collins kill. Georgia State (4-2) fought back with a 9-1 run en route to taking the opening frame 30-27.

It was the Bobcats who used a rally to stage a comeback in game two, taking a 24-23 lead after being down 13-19. The `Cats would hold a 27-25 advantage, but Amy Lusk led a 5-0 Panther run to send Texas State into the 2-0 hole at the half.

Texas State pulled within 2-1 after a close game three. Amy Weigle had four kills in the game as the Bobcats opened with a 7-1 run out of the blocks and never trailed for the game, taking it by a 30-28 score on a Collins service ace.

Georgia State closed out the match in game four by finishing on a 7-1 run that erased a 25-23 Bobcat lead. Lusk again capped the game for the Panthers, scoring the final two points on a kill and a service ace.

Jones was the only Bobcat in double figures in kills, as the rest of the team struggled to a .063 hitting percentage for the match. Freshman setter Shelbi Irvin notched her first career double-double in her first-ever match, leading the Bobcats with 28 assists while also having 12 digs.

Ana Paula Ferreira's 16 kills paced Georgia State, who also got 13 kills from Lusk.
