Rice Knocks Off Texas State, 6-4

HOUSTON - Rice scored five runs in the bottom of the third en route to a 6-4 win over Texas State at Reckling Park here Wednesday.

With the win, the Owls improved to 38-11 while Texas State dropped to 32-18. The Bobcats return to Southland Conference action Friday when they open a three-game series with McNeese State in San Marcos.

Texas State took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the third.

After Owl catcher Danny Lehmann led off Rice's half of the inning with a walk, Brian Friday and Jared Gayhart had back-to-back hits to plate a run. The Owls would load the bases and score their second run when Texas State starter B.J. Boening issued a bases-loaded walk. A two-run single up the middle by Alex Luna gave Rice a 4-2 lead and the home team would add another run when Diego Seastrunk hit into a fielder's choice to drive in a run.

Pat Crumpton singled to drive in a run in the top of the fourth to cut Rice's lead to 5-3. The Owls added another run in the sixth and after the Bobcats scored in the top of the seventh, the squad could not muster another rally.

Boening fell to 0-3 with the loss. Rice reliever Matt Langwell worked the final five innings and improved to 5-1 with the win.

Texas State's David Wood led the Bobcats at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two RBI.
