Bobcats Drop Final Regular Season Game, 5-3

SAN ANTONIO--Texas State dropped game three in the final regular season game of the series against Texas-San Antonio, 5-3. The Roadrunners were able to find luck again in the bottom of the ninth, with Mitch Ponza hitting a two-run homer for the win.

The loss to UTSA makes the Bobcats the number-three seed going into the Southland Conference Tournament. Texas State will face number-four seed Sam Houston State on Wednesday, May 23 at 7:00 p.m. in Natchitoches, La.

Steven Siers started on the mound for the `Cats and threw well. The Bobcats went three up and three down in the first two innings before giving up one run.

UTSA jumped on the scoreboard first, taking a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Ponza walked, stole second and was brought in off of a Marshal Davis RBI single.

Texas State tied it up in the fifth, with Laurn Randell scoring. Randell doubled to left center and moved to third on an error by the left fielder. Ben Theriot singled to right field to score Randell.

The Roadrunners took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth.

The Bobcats got back in the ball game with pinch hitter Pat Crumpton hitting an RBI double into left. Crumpton scored Randell, who singled in the eighth inning. Thomas Field kept the momentum going, hitting his second double of the day, scoring Crumpton and putting the Bobcats up, 3-2.

The intense I-35 rivalry continued in the bottom of the eighth with the Roadrunners tying the game, 3-3.

Texas State had a chance to score in the ninth, leaving two runners stranded on base. Randell went two-for three and scored two runs in his first game back from to lead the offense.

The Bobcats wrap up the regular season with an overall record of 35-21 and 20-10 in conference. Lamar finished their season 20-10 in conference as well, but beat out the Bobcats in head-to-head competition.
