Final Stats
SAN ANTONIO--Texas State fell to I-35 rival, Texas-San Antonio in a 10th inning thriller, 7-6 at Roadrunner Field. Jason Baca pitched one of his best games of the year despite the loss. Baca threw four innings, allowing three hits, two runs to score while striking out a career high seven batters.
The loss puts the Bobcats at 20-9 in the Southland Conference and 35-20 overall. The win gives the Roadrunners the SLC Championship and the number one seed in the tournament. The two face off for the final game of the series, Saturday, May 19 @ 2:00 p.m.
The Roadrunners started game two of the series much like game one, taking an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Michael Rockett hit his eighth home run of the season, driving in two runs for UTSA.
UTSA added another run in the third, after a Roadrunner triple and an RBI single.
Texas State settled down and began making some big plays. They turned a double play in the third inning with the bases loaded to get out of the inning and Mike Hart struck out Rockett for the final out in the fourth inning, with two runners in scoring positions.
The Bobcats started to get into the swing of things, scoring two runs in the fifth inning. Aaron Garza led off the inning, getting hit by a pitch. He moved to second on a Paul Goldschmidt single and scored off of an Adam Witek hit. Elliott Babcock hit a fly ball out to center field and Goldschmidt tagged up and made it to third on a close play. Ben Theriot hit a sacrifice fly to score Goldschmidt, cutting the Roadrunners lead, 3-2.
Texas State tied it up in the sixth, with Thomas Field scoring. Field walked and advanced to second on a Jared Bunn sacrifice bunt. David Wood hit an RBI single, scoring Field.
The Roadrunners took a 4-3 lead in the seventh after Rockett singled to left field and scored off of an error.
The Bobcats fought back to take the lead in the eighth, scoring two runs. Theriot led off the inning with a walk and Laurn Randell came in to run. Randell stole second and moved to third on a Witek sacrifice bunt. Randell scored off of a Field groundout, tying the game. Bunn stepped in to give the Bobcats new life, hitting a double to right field. He would score off of a Goldschmidt single and put the Bobcats up, 5-4.
Baca came in to start the sixth inning and came in huge for the `Cats. The senior got Texas State out of the eighth with back-to-back strikeouts to get out of the eighth.
But Trent Lockwood hit a home run in the bottom of the ninth to send the game in extra innings.
Casey Guest led off the tenth inning with a double to left center. Wood was intentionally walked for a second time and Garza was hit by another pitch, loading the bases. After an intense at bat, Goldschmidt was hit by pitcher Zach Calhoon, scoring Guest to give Texas State a 6-5 lead.
But it was the Roadrunners night, as they were able to drive in two runs to take the win and the conference championship.
Goldschmidt went two-for-four at the plate, scoring one run and driving in two. So far, the freshman is six-for-eight in the series against UTSA. Closer Eric Weaver takes the loss for Texas State and falls to 5-1 on the year.
