Final Stats
San Marcos -
Texas State got one step closer to clinching the number one seed in the Southland Conference tournament, posting a 7-2 win over Texas-San Antonio. The Bobcats were led by seniors David Wood and Justin Fiske and improve to 20-8 in the SLC and 35-19 overall. Wood hit his 13th home run on the season and Fiske threw his fourth complete game of the year.
The Roadrunners fall to 22-6 in the SLC and 32-20 overall, with Josh Ruffin taking the loss and falling to 6-4 on the year.
UTSA started off on fire in the first inning, hitting three doubles and scoring two runs to take an early, 2-0 lead.
Wood slowed down the Roadrunners momentum, hitting a home run to right center on the very first pitch in the bottom of the first. Then Fiske took care of business on the mound. The College Station native did not allow a hit in the last five innings of play and retired eight batters on the night.
The Roadrunners soon found themselves in trouble when Paul Goldschmidt led off in the fifth inning, hitting a single to right field. Elliott Babcock singled, moving Goldschmidt to second and both would advance on a Gerry Cervantez sacrifice bunt. Casey Guest hit a fielder's choice, to score Goldschmidt and advance Babcock to third. Thomas Field followed with another fielder's choice, scoring Babcock. Guest moved to second on the play, with an error by the shortstop. Guest would score off of a Jared Bunn single, putting the Bobcats up, 4-2.
Texas State tacked on two more runs in the sixth, taking a 6-2 lead. Senior Aaron Garza picked off right where the Bobcats left in the fifth, hitting a double to left field. Adam Witek singled to right and advanced to second on the throw, putting Garza in scoring position on third. Goldschmidt drove Garza in with a single to right field.
An insurance run in the seventh by Wood solidified the win.
Goldschmidt went four-for-four at the plate, driving in two runs and scoring one himself. Wood was two-for-five on the night, scoring two runs.
Nine Bobcats played their last game at Bobcat Field tonight and they were honored before the first pitch. Texas State recognized seniors: Jason Baca, B.J. Boening, Jared Bunn, Pat Crumpton, Justin Fiske, Aaron Garza, Casey Guest, Matt Oakes and David Wood.
Texas State finishes out the series with UTSA at Roadrunner Field. Game two of the series takes place on Friday, May 18 at 6:00 p.m. and they wrap up the regular season on Saturday, May 19 at 2:00 p.m. in San Antonio.
