Final Stats
San Marcos -
Senior Jared Bunn took care of business at the plate, hitting a game winning home run in the seventh inning. Texas State improves to 18-7 in the Southland Conference and 33-18 overall. The loss puts McNeese State at 15-9 in the conference and 19-29 overall.
Both teams started off strong, giving up very little on defense. Justin Fiske was on the mound, throwing eight innings. He gave up three hits, walked three and struck out seven for the `Cats and improves to 8-2.
The Bobcat defense also came up big tonight. Left fielder Elliott Babcock took a home run away from Jeramie Broussard in the top of the fifth and the infield was able to catch three runners stealing.
McNeese State got on the scoreboard first scoring the lone run in the sixth inning. Justin Beitzel got to first on an error by the shortstop and would score off of a Charlie Kingrey sacrifice fly, for the unearned run.
Texas State answered back, tying the game up in the bottom of the sixth. Thomas Field led off the inning with a walk and was brought in by a David Wood double to right center.
The Cowboys took out starting pitcher Jonathan Conrad and brought in freshman Tyler Davis to start out he seventh inning. Bunn stepped up to the plate and sent the ball sailing over the right fielders' head for his fifth home run of the season, giving the Bobcats a 2-1 lead.
The Bobcats brought in closer Eric Weaver to finish the job and he did. Weaver allowed two hits and struck out one to end the game.
Game two of the series takes place Saturday, May 12. First pitch slated for 2:00 p.m. at Bobcats Field.
