No. 13 A&M Overcomes Texas State

ROUND ROCK - Despite holding an early lead, Texas State fell to No. 13 Texas A&M 9-4 at Round Rock's Dell Diamond. The Bobcats are now 21-10 and head into this week's Southland Conference series with Sam Houston State at 8-1 in league play. Texas A&M improved to 26-6 and is 5-4 in the Big 12.

Leading the way for Texas State was freshman Laurn Randell who went 3-for-5 and scored one run. Third baseman Paul Goldschmidt went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Pitcher Kyle Gembler and the Bobcats got off to a rough start in the first inning. A&M shortstop Brandon Hicks led off the game by sending a pitch over the left field fence for his seventh home run of the season. Hicks went 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI.

Randell tied the game in the bottom of the first. He singled and stole second before scoring on a Goldschmidt base hit to left field.

Texas State took the lead in the second, scoring two runs. Aaron Garza led off with a single and stole second. Ben Theriot laid down a sacrifice bunt and Garza scored off a Gerry Cervantez hit. Casey Guest would later score Cervantez with a base hit to right.

The Bobcats defense was strong in the early innings. Reliever Jason Baca came up big for Texas State, striking out Hicks with the bases loaded to get out of the fourth inning.

Texas A&M added a run in the fifth to cut Texas State's lead to 3-2.

The Aggie bats came alive in the sixth as they scored five runs off five hits. Craig Stinson hit a two-run homer for his fourth of the year, giving A&M a 7-3 lead. A run in the seventh would extend the Aggies' lead to 8-3.

The Bobcats would cut the lead to 8-4 as Field scored in the seventh. But the Aggies added a run in the eighth to seal the win.

Texas State's series with Sam Houston State begins Thursday with a 6:30 game. The teams will play Friday at 2 and Saturday at 1.
