BEAUMONT-- Paul Goldschmidt hit his first collegiate homer in an 8-1 win over Lamar. Goldschmidt hit a three-run homer in the third inning giving Texas State a 5-0 lead. The freshman went one-for-three at the plate, scoring one run with three RBIs.

The Bobcats bounced back after being shutout in game one of the series, 3-0 on April 27. Texas State is 30-15 overall and Lamar is 28-18 overall. Both teams are currently 15-5 in the Southland Conference going into the final game of the series.

Texas State got on the scoreboard first, picking up five runs in the third inning. Ben Theriot led things off with a hit and advanced to second on a Casey Guest ground out. Thomas Field was hit by a pitch and Adam Witek singled to left field, loading the bases. Theriot and Field both scored off of a David Wood hit. Goldschmidt then stepped up to the plate and cleared the bases with a home run to left field.

The Bobcats took a 7-0 lead at the end of the fourth, scoring two more runs. Guest led off the inning with a hit and moved to second on a Field sacrifice bunt. Witek doubled to left field, scoring Guest and advanced to third by a Cardinal error. Wood would get his third RBI of the game, singling up the middle to score Witek.

Witek scored the Bobcats final run in the sixth. He started off the inning with a double and moved to third once Goldschmidt was hit by a pitch. Aaron Garza hit a fielder's choice to score Witek.

Steven Siers started on the mound for Texas State, throwing 5.2 innings. He allowed two hits, one run to score and struck out two. Siers and the Bobcats gave the Cardinals one run in the sixth inning.

Jason Baca made his 77th career appearance and closed for Texas State, taking over in the sixth inning. Baca allowed three hits, no runs and retired two in 3.1 innings of work. The Sweeny native is currently tied for most career appearances with Michael Gultz, who played in 2001-2004.

Baca and the Bobcat defense held the Cardinals scoreless in the last three innings of play for the win. Witek went three-for-five at the plate with one RBI and scored an individual career high three runs. Wood had three RBIs, scoring one run and went three-for-four at the plate.

Texas State and Lamar battle to decide who takes the series on April 29 at 1:00 p.m.
