SAN MARCOS -
Freshmen Megan Mikeska and Elizabeth Dennis combined to allowing only two runs, but the offense failed to push a run across as Texas State fell to No. 8 Baylor 2-0 Wednesday night.
The game marked the final non-conference game for both teams, as Texas State fell to 25-22 with the loss and the Bears improved to 42-11.
Amy Krueger's double on Baylor's first pitch of the game extended her hitting streak to a season-high seven games, and the senior advanced to third on a passed ball with nobody out. Baylor would get out of the jam, inducing a pair of groundouts and a strikeout to keep the game scoreless.
The game stayed that way until the third inning, when Nicole Wesley singled and, after a walk to move to second, scored on an RBI single by Chelsi Lake.
The Bobcats threatened again in the fourth when Karen Taylor singled to lead off the inning. Jill Kloesel pinch ran and advanced to third with two outs, but Ashton Peters flew out to end the threat.
Baylor added its insurance run the next inning after a close play on a double steal put runners in scoring position with one out. Peters made a great throw third base as Baylor's Brette Reagan overslid the bag, but contact on the tag forced the ball out of Ali McCormack's glove to allow Reagan to reach safely. Reagan then came home on an RBI groundout by Miriam Romero to make it 2-0.
Texas State managed only one more hit in the game off Bears pitcher Lisa Ferguson, who struck out five in four innings to notch her 20th win. Mikeska took the loss in her third start, falling to 0-2 after allowing both runs on five hits and six walks in 4.2 innings.
The Bobcats close out their home season this weekend with a huge series against McNeese State. The Cowgirls currently sit right behind the `Cats in fifth place in the SLC standings, and the winner of the series will have the advantage for the SLC Tournament fourth seed. Sunday's series finale will also mark senior day for Krueger and fellow seniors Chelsea Giroux, Haley Koop and Sarah Lancour.
