Final Stats
SAN MARCOS--Ty Harrington's Bobcats were down but never out, as they played their way to a 5-4 win on Sunday afternoon. The Texas State baseball team improves to 27-12 overall and 12-3 in the Southland Conference. The Bobcats handed the Lions their eighth conference loss, as they fall to 6-8 in conference and 23-15 overall.
The Bobcats finished 2-1 against the Lions in the three-game series. Texas State shutout SLU in game one, 7-0 on April 13 and lost game two on April 14, 5-2.
Steven Siers started on the mound for Texas State, giving up four runs in the first inning. The junior settled down after the first, allowing eight hits and striking out six batters in 5.1 innings.
SLU banged out four hits in the first inning and took a 4-0 lead. Scoring for the Lions was Bryan Frichter, Richard Imhoff, Chase Burch and Dillon Sudduth.
The Bobcats got on the scoreboard in the second, scoring two runs. Paul Goldschmidt, who went two-for-three at the plate and scored two runs, led off with a hit to left center. Aaron Garza moved Goldschmidt to second and reached first on error by the shortstop. Adam Witek grounded out to the second baseman, but advanced Goldschmidt to third and Garza to second. Gerry Cervantez singled to third base, scoring both Goldschmidt and Garza.
Thomas Field added a run in the third inning, cutting the Lions lead to 4-3. Field walked and Laurn Randell laid down a sacrifice bunt, moving Field to second. Goldschmidt singled to right field to score Field.
Texas State took the lead in the sixth inning, after Goldschmidt and Garza scored, putting the Bobcats up 5-4. Goldschmidt reached on an error by the right fielder and scored off of a Garza double. Garza moved to second when Witek walked. Cervantez hit a sacrifice bunt, putting Garza at third and Witek at second. Jared Bunn laid down another sacrifice bunt to score Garza.
Siers, reliever Eric Weaver and the Bobcat defense took care of business on the field from there on out. Weaver threw 3.2 innings, allowing one hit, no runs and struck out two.
Catcher Cervantez and second baseman Casey Guest caught two Lions stealing, in addition to picking off a runner a second in the sixth inning. Siers and first baseman David Wood also picked off a runner at first in the third inning.
Texas State goes on the road for a three-game conference series with Central Arkansas. The two face off on April 20 at 2:00 p.m. in Conway, Arkansas. Game two takes place on April 21 at 2:00 p.m. and the final game of the series is on April 22 at 1:00 p.m.
