Islanders Hand Bobcats First Conference Loss

CORPUS CHRISTI--Texas State scored first and out hit A&M-Corpus Christi but it would not be enough as they suffered their first Southland Conference loss. The Bobcats are now 6-1 in the SLC and 19-9 overall, while the Islanders improve to 3-4 in the conference and 16-13 overall.

Martin Parra belted out his second home run of the season, bringing in three runs, to take the lead in the seventh. A&M-Corpus Christi stopped a threatening Texas State offense in the ninth for the win.

The Bobcats wasted no time, putting up three runs in the first as Thomas Field, Aaron Garza and David Wood all scored. Field reached on a throwing error and got to second by a Laurn Randell sacrifice bunt. Wood and Garza both walked, loading the bases. A&M-Corpus Christi pitcher Will Norman walked Jared Bunn, scoring Field.

In his first appearance since being injured in the Rice game, Paul Goldschmidt singled, scoring Wood, putting Garza on the move. Garza scored off of an Islander throwing error.

A&M-Corpus Christi answered back with four runs of their own, taking a 4-3 at the conclusion of the first inning.

Texas State took the lead in the third, as Bunn, Goldschmidt and Gerry Cervantez scored. Bunn and Goldschmidt singled to center field. Cervantez singled, scoring Bunn and Goldschmidt off of an error.

The Islanders would tie it up at 6-6, with two runs added in the fourth. The Bobcats pulled ahead in the seventh, as Goldschmidt and Cervantez scored their second runs of the night.

Goldschmidt was three-for-four at the plate, scoring two runs. Jason Baca (3-2) threw 4.2 innings and while credited with the loss, threw a career high six strikeouts. He had previously struck out five Baylor Bears earlier in the season. Baca allowed two hits, three runs and walked two.

Texas State gets another crack at A&M-Corpus Christi on March 31 in a double header. First game starts at 1:00 p.m. with second beginning at 4:00 p.m.
