Final Stats
SAN MARCOS -
Ashley Ellis earned a three-set win at No 1 singles before Ali Gulida's victory at No. 6 singles secured a 4-3 win over Texas-San Antonio Sunday.
The win was the Bobcats' first against UTSA since Texas State transitioned to Division I in the mid-1980s. The victory was also Texas State's second of the weekend as the squad improved to 8-5 and 4-2 in Southland Conference play. UTSA dropped to 9-5 and 4-3.
The Bobcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead in Sunday's match, sweeping all three doubles matches. Rabea Hartmann stretched Texas State's lead to 2-0 with an early 6-2, 6-2 win over Tanya Hasking at No. 4 singles.
Ellis would later give the Bobcats' their third point of the match with a tightly contested two-set victory which included a tie-breaker victory in the second set - a 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) against Nathalie Wallin. Gulida then secured the victory with a 7-5, 6-3 over Holly Phillips.
A loss at No. 2 singles which ended in a third-set tie breaker kept the Bobcats from another point. UTSA's Sandra Kukla defeated the Bobcats' Andrea Giraldo 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5).
Texas State returns to action next Saturday when the Bobcats travel to Northwestern State. The road swing also includes a match next Sunday at Central Arkansas.
