Bobcats Top Tigers
Aaron Garza homers and Mike Hart strikes out 11 in 10-2 win over Texas Southern.
SAN MARCOS-- Aaron Garza hit his first home run of the season and Mike Hart set a new career high, as Texas State went on to defeat Texas Southern, 10-2. The Bobcats, now 10-5, had 11 hits and were led by pitchers Mike Hart and Steven Siers. Hart (3-1) threw seven innings, allowing three hits, two runs and struck out a new career-high 11 batters. Hart had struck out eight batters against Notre Dame earlier in the season.
The Bobcats got on the scoreboard in the second inning, scoring one run. Garza would leadoff with a double, was advanced to third by a Jared Bunn fly out and would score off of an Adam Witek single.
Texas State wasted no time in the third, adding on four more runs. Pat Crumpton led off with a single and moved to second off of a Thomas Field ground out. Laurn Randell hit a double, scoring Crumpton. David Wood reached first on a Tiger error, scoring Randell. Garza stepped up to the plate and hit a home run, scoring two and putting the Bobcats up 5-0.
Texas Southern (3-6) got a run in the fifth and sixth, but Texas State would add three runs in the fifth increasing the lead. Randell and Garza both scored on a Bunn double and Witek would hit a single to right field scoring Bunn.
Two Bobcat insurance runs were added in the sixth as Field and Garza both scored. Field walked, then stole second and third and was brought in by a Randell fly out. Bunn would single to left for his third RBI of the game, scoring Garza, who got on first by a passed ball.
Siers came on in the eighth and allowed only one hit and struck out three. Garza led the Bobcats, scoring four runs and was three-for-five at the plate.
Texas State takes on Texas Southern for game two of the series March 3 at 2:00 p.m. at Bobcat Field.
