Final Stats
EDINBURG-- In Day Two of the UTPA Baseball Classic, Texas-Pan American pitcher Josh Wymer (1-0) led the way, tossing eight innings, allowing four hits and only one Bobcat to score as UTPA went on to defeat Texas State, 3-1.
Kyle Gembler was the starting pitcher for Texas State and threw five innings. He allowed one hit and one run to score, striking out three batters. UTPA first jumped on the score board in the bottom of the second. Abraham Garcia walked, stole second but due to a Bobcat throwing error advanced to third base. He was brought home by a Jeremy Johnson single, putting the Broncs up 1-0.
Senior transfer Matt Oakes was brought in to relieve Gembler in the bottom of the sixth. Garcia was first to face Oakes and was hit by a pitch. Johnson then hit a fielder's choice and the Bobcat defense threw out Garcia at second. An Oakes walk, would put runners on second and first, with one out. Lyndon Bartosh, pinch hit for first baseman Zach Smith and struck out swinging. The Broncs, however, rallied with two outs, scoring both Johnson and Osiel Flores off of a UTPA single to left by Patrick Brooks and a throwing error by the Bobcat defense. Bobcat shortstop Thomas Field ended the inning by fielding a grounder and throwing out Leighton Autry at first.
Behind 3-0, Texas State found some offense by getting on the scoreboard in the top of the seventh. Aaron Garza started things off by hitting a double to left center. Jared Bunn grounded out at second, but advanced Garza to third. Designated hitter Paul Goldschmidt was able to bring Garza in on an RBI grounder to second base. Through two games, Goldschmidt, a true freshman, is 4-for-9 at the plate, with two RBIs.
This would be the lone run of the night for Texas State and the last runs of the game. UTPA clenched the 3-1 victory, as both teams were held scoreless in the eighth and the ninth. The loss puts the Bobcats at 1-1 on the season.
Garza led the way for Texas State. He had two hits and scored the only run. The Bobcats posted a team total 14 hits in the 8-3 win over Oklahoma Friday, but were held to only five hits on Saturday.
Texas State gets another crack at the Broncs tomorrow as they face off for the final game of the UTPA Baseball Classic at 5:00 pm on Sunday.
Jones Sidelined for Season
Texas State's Kyle Jones will sit out the rest of the season due to an arm injury. Jones was named to the SLC all-conference honorable mention team last season. He saw action in 56 games, starting in 55. Jones contributed 69 hits and 29 RBIs for a batting average of .318. He was to be a huge contributor to the Bobcat offense this season.
