Final Stats
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.-- After going 0-3 in the last road games, Texas State got back on track with an 11-4 victory over New Mexico. The Bobcats go to 9-5 overall, posting 15 hits and nine RBIs in game three with New Mexico. Second baseman Casey Guest got his first home run of the season, hitting one out to left field in the fifth.
Eric Weaver is credited with the win and is 2-0 while Lobos pitcher Jacob Norton falls to 0-2. Bobcat pitchers Justin Fiske, Weaver and team held New Mexico to just nine hits. Fiske threw 4.1 innings, allowing six hits, four runs and striking out three, while Weaver allowed three hits, no runs and struck out one.
New Mexico would keep it interesting by staying close. It wasn't until the sixth inning, when Texas State finally started to pull away.
The Bobcats put up one run in the first, with Thomas Field scoring off of a Lobos error. Field walked and was brought home by an error from the center fielder. New Mexico would add one run in the first as well.
A big third inning put Texas State ahead 5-1. The inning started the same as the first, with Field walking. A Laurn Randell sacrifice bunt and David Wood triple scored Field. Wood scored off of an Aaron Garza single. Garza advanced to third by Adam Witek, who singled to right field. Designated hitter Elliott Babcock brought Garza in and moved Witek to third with another single. Gerry Cervantez would round out the hitting, by placing a ball to right field, scoring Witek.
The Bobcats added runs in the fourth and fifth. Randell singled up the middle and was advanced around the bases by Wood and Garza in the fourth. Guest's home run came in the fifth, putting Texas State up 7-1.
New Mexico started their attempted comeback in the fifth, scoring three runs. The Texas State offensive quickly livened up again, scoring three more runs in sixth. Randell led the inning off with a walk and was brought home by a Wood double to left center. Garza was hit by a pitch and both runners advanced off of a Jared Bunn sacrifice bunt. Witek flied out and scored Wood, giving the Bobcats a 10-4 lead.
The Texas State defense was able to hold New Mexico scoreless for the rest of the game, while scoring a final run in the eighth. Bunn singled, moved to third on ground outs from Witek and Babcock and scored on a wild pitch.
Field, Randell, Wood and Garza all scored two runs a piece. Wood went 3-for-5 at the plate, hitting the first triple of the season. Bunn, Witek, Babcock and Cervantez were all 2-for-5 at the plate in the win.
Texas State gets ready to take on Texas Southern at home in a three-game series. The series begins Friday, March 2 at 6:30 p.m. at Bobcat Field.
