Despite a 21-point effort by Dylan Moseley and a 50 percent shooting night by the Bobcats, Texas State dropped a 78-75 overtime game at Stephen F. Austin Thursday in Johnson Coliseum.
Josh Alexander's three-pointer on Stephen F. Austin's first offensive possession of overtime put the Lumberjacks out for good as SFA outscored the Bobcats 11-8 in the extra period.
A three-pointer by Texas State junior Chris Agwumaro with 2:00 to play in overtime tied the game at 72-72 but SFA regained the lead when Corwin Ragland converted a three-point play for the `Jacks. After Moseley missed a pair of free throws with 1:30 to play in OT, Kyle Jacobs' layin at the 1:04 mark put SFA up by five, 77-72.
Moseley drilled a three-pointer with 51 seconds left before Ragland made the first of two free throws to give SFA a 78-75 lead. Texas State would get two offensive possessions in the final half minute of the game but the Bobcats could not convert on a pair of three-point attempts.
Stephen F. Austin locked up a berth to the O'Reilly Auto Parts Southland Conference Tournament with the victory, improving to 15-10 and 8-5 in SLC play. Texas State is now 9-18 and 4-10. The Bobcats play host to Sam Houston State in their final home game Saturday afternoon in Strahan Coliseum. SHSU defeated Texas-Arlington 92-78 on Thursday.
Texas State jumped out to an 11-3 lead and held a six-point lead with less than four minutes to play in the first half. Back-to-back buckets by Antuane Miller, who scored 23 points off the bench in the Lumberjacks' first outing against Texas State, sparked a 14-5 SFA run that gave the `Jacks a 37-34 lead at intermission. The late-half rally also included a pair of three-pointers by Keith Hardaway. Miller would cap the run by a dunk.
Hardaway led SFA with 17 points.
SFA would stretch its lead to 10 points early in the second half and never trailed in the period. But the Bobcats would make a comeback. In the final minutes, Agwumaro scored a layup then Bush hit one of two free throws before also scoring from inside. The rally cut the Lumberjacks' lead to 65-64 with 1:35 to play.
Ragland would give SFA a 67-64 lead but Brandon Thomas was fouled while scoring with 16 seconds remaining then hit the ensuing free throw to tie the game at 67-67. Ragland had a chance to give SFA a late lead in regulation but missed a free throw with 12 seconds to play.
