Final Stats
AUSTIN-- Texas State could not overcome seven runs scored in the first two innings and fell to No. 22 Texas, 7-1. The Bobcats are 8-3 on the season as the Longhorns improve to 7-5.
Bobcat pitcher, B.J. Boening (0-1) struggled as Texas jumped to an early lead in the first, scoring three runs. The Longhorns would continue where they left off in the second, adding four more runs.
Texas State would have scoring opportunities, leaving runners stranded on base in the second, third and sixth innings. The Bobcats were able to score late in the game, getting the lone run in the eighth.
Catcher Gerry Cervantez replaced Ben Theriot in the fifth, and would walk in the eighth. Casey Guest replaced Pat Crumpton and would also walk, advancing Cervantez to second. Thomas Field stepped in, hitting a single to shortstop. Texas shortstop Pat McCroy initiated the double play, getting Guest at second and Field at first. Adam Witek would hit a single to left field, scoring Cervantez.
The Longhorns would hold Texas State in the ninth to take the win. Both teams went through their respected pitching staffs, Texas threw six pitchers while Texas State threw five.
The Bobcats were held to seven hits. Seniors Aaron Garza and David Wood led the offense, going 2-for-3 and 2-for-4 at the plate.
Texas State travels to Albuquerque, N.M. to take on New Mexico in a three-game series. First game is Friday, Feb. 23, with the first pitch at 4:00 p.m. The Bobcats take on the Lobos again on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. and Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
