Texas State Shuts Out Notre Dame, 6-0

SAN ANTONIO - Texas State shut out Notre Dame 6-0 Sunday at Wolff Stadium to sweep a two-game series against the Irish.

Kyle Gembler and Justin Fiske combined for a two-hit shutout. Gembler (1-1) pitched six innings, striking out three to pick up the win. Fiske recorded his first save of the year, allowing no hits and allowing just one base runner.

Texas State is now 8-2 while Notre Dame is 1-2.

The Bobcats would get on the board in the second inning. Laurn Randell was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a throwing error and failed pickoff attempt by Notre Dame pitcher Sam Elam. Elliott Babcock would score Randell when he grounded out to first base.

The Texas State bats would come alive in the third. Second baseman Casey Guest led things off with a single down the left field line. Thomas Field would walk and Adam Witek would single to load the bases. Guest scored on a passed ball, with Field and Witek advancing. Jared Bunn and Randell moved the Bobcats around the bases with a walk and a hit by the pitcher, scoring Field.

The lead was extended in the fifth to 5-0 as the Bobcats added two more runs. Leading off the inning was Witek with a single to first base. Witek stole second and advanced to third on a David Wood hit. Aaron Garza laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Witek. Bunn would ground out to second to move Wood to third before Randell singled in the run.

Fiske and company would hold the Fighting Irish in the ninth for the shutout. Witek was 2-for-3 at the plate, scoring two runs. Garza and Randell each had two RBIs in the win.

The Bobcats travel to Austin on Tuesday to take on Texas.
