Final Stats
SAN ANTONIO-- Texas State held on for a 2-1 victory over Notre Dame on Saturday with timed scoring and solid pitching. The Bobcats are now 7-2, as they hand the Fighting Irish, 1-1, their first loss of the season. Jason Baca is credited with the win, now 3-0 on the season. Baca came in to relieve Mike Hart, throwing two innings, allowing no hits or runs, striking out two.
Hart threw six innings, allowing one hit, one run and striking out eight. Both teams were held scoreless until the third with Notre Dame scoring first. Freshman Michael Wright was sent to first on a walk. Wright scored off of a Danny Dressman sacrifice fly out to left field, putting Notre Dame up, 1-0.
Senior David Wood would tie it up in the fifth, with his third home run of the season. With two outs left in the fifth, Wood stepped up to the plate and nailed the first pitch over the center field wall. His home run is the first that David Phelps has given up in a Notre Dame uniform. Wood currently leads Texas State in home runs this season.
Both teams would give up little, leaving a man on base after every inning. The Bobcats would finally pull ahead in the eighth inning. Laurn Randell opened the inning with a single to shortstop. Catcher Ben Theriot would advance on a Notre Dame catcher interference, advancing Randell to second. Elliott Babcock would also single to shortstop, loading the bases. Second baseman Pat Crumpton put the ball in play, hitting a foul ball into left field. Crumpton's sacrifice fly sent Randell home to score the winning run.
Eric Weaver came in to close for the Bobcats, allowing one hit and striking out two in the final inning of play. The Bobcats had nine hits, with Babcock going 2-for-3 at the plate.
