Baylor pinch hitter Tim Jackson lined a three-run double down the left field line in the seventh inning to give Baylor a 4-2 lead and the Bears would go on to beat Texas State 10-4 Tuesday at the Baylor Ballpark.
Texas State reliever Justin Fiske came on to pitch the seventh with Texas State leading 2-1. He would walk Ben Booker, give up a single to Matt Sodolak and hit Chase Gerdes in the helmet to load the bases with no outs. Jackson then came on to deliver the base-clearing double with a 3-2 count. A single by Beamer Weems would put runners on the corners.
Texas State would bring on closer Eric Weaver after Fiske got Dustin Dickerson to pop up to third for the first out of the seventh and the Bears would add two runs in the inning. Baylor would add four runs in the eighth.
The win was the Bears' first of the season as they improved to 1-3 with a home-opening win. Texas State had a four-game winning streak snapped and fell to 5-2. The Bobcats return home for a Friday night game against Prairie View A&M before taking on Notre Dame in a weekend series at Wolff Stadium in San Antonio.
On Tuesday, Baylor jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. The Bears' catcher, Matt Sodolak, led off the inning with a double to left field. A sacrifice bunt by Chase Gerdes moved Sodolak to third and he would on a single by Dustin Dickerson.
Texas State would tie the score at 11-1 in the fifth. Jared Bunn led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on a base hit by Laurn Randell. Elliot Babcock would advance the runners when he got down a two-out sacrifice bunt. Pat Crumpton would then ground the ball to the right side of the infield, scoring Bunn for the tying run.
Texas State starter B.J. Boening went four innings. He struck out a career-high six batters, doubling his previous career mark from his sophomore season. Jason Baca entered the game in the fifth and proceeded to retire the side, striking out the final two batters he faced in the frame.
The Bobcats would take a 2-1 lead in the sixth after Baylor reliever Jake Weghorst entered the game. Weghorst hit Thomas Field to lead off the inning. Field moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Adam Witek and scored when Aaron Garza blooped a base hit to right field. Garza attempted to go to second on a throw down the third base line but was thrown out by catcher Sodolak.
After giving up a walk to Dustin Dickerson to lead off the bottom of the sixth, Baca struckout the side to finish with finish with five strikeouts in two innings worked.
