Texas State Defeats Prairie View A&M

San Marcos-- Things started off slowly on Friday night for the Bobcats, but timed hitting, smart base running and solid pitching helped Texas State defeat Prairie View A&M, 7-2. Mike Hart started things off for the Bobcats, pitching six innings. He allowed three hits, one run and struck out eight batters putting him 2-0 on the season.

 

Prairie View A&M, 8-1, got on the board first in the second. Paul Johnson singled up the middle. Brandon Kendricks also singled to left field advancing Johnson to second. A Brandon Whitby double scored Johnson, putting the Panthers up 1-0.

 

Texas State, 4-1, would not get on the board until the third, scoring three runs. Shortstop Thomas Field started things off with a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a David Wood walk. Aaron Garza was hit by Panther pitcher Matthew Chase, advancing both Field, and Wood. Designated hitter Jared Bunn hit a single up the middle, bringing in both Field and Wood and advancing Garza to second base. Garza stole third and ran home on an error by the Panther catcher, putting the Bobcats up 3-1.

 

The Bobcats added two more runs in the sixth. Ben Theriot got on base with a walk, advanced to third on a Field double. Third baseman Adam Witek singled and advanced to second on the throw, bringing in both runners, putting Texas State up 5-1.

 

In the seventh inning, Texas State added another run. Garza singled to right field and was advanced to second on a Bunn walk. Larun Randell laid down a sacrifice bunt, advancing Bunn and Garza. Junior outfielder Elliott Babcock's sacrifice fly to center field scored Garza.

 

The Panthers would score its final run of the evening in the eighth. Shortstop Michael Richard hit a single to center field. He stole second and then third, putting him in scoring position. Teammate Myrio Richard stepped up to the plate, grounding out to third, but scoring Michael Richard.

 

Witek added a run in the eighth as well. He singled to right field, stole second and then third with two outs. Wood walked for the second time that evening. On the next play, Wood stole second and Panther catcher, George McDonald went to second for the out, scoring in Witek off the throw. Prairie View A&M had chances to score in the ninth, but could not capitalize on them.

 

Garza was three-for-four, scoring two runs in the win. Bunn had two RBIs and was two-for-three at the plate. Witek, went two-for-five with two RBIs and scored once. The Bobcats face Prairie View for game two on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at Bobcat Field.
