Dallas, Tx. -
Jonathan Sloan was 7-13 from the field and 9-10 behind the stripe in a career-high 23-point game to aid the Texas State Bobcats to a 113-87 victory over Paul Quinn College Sunday afternoon at the SMU Holiday Classic.
The Bobcats finished just three points shy of tying the all-time school record for highest points scored in a game set Dec. 6, 1980 against Texas Lutheran.
Paul Quinn played a much faster game than many of Texas State's opponents, but the Bobcat's speed was no match for the Tigers. The `Cats went through the half consistently leading by ten points or more over the purple and gold. Texas State shot 50 percent from the field in the half, a drastic improvement from yesterday's outing, that handed the `Cats 59 points over the Tiger's 42.
Cameron Johnson and Ty Gough were each 4-6 from the field in the first period of regulation, fighting their way underneath the basket for 27 Texas State points in the paint.
The Tigers were no contest for the Bobcats in the second half as well, shooting just 35.1 percent to Texas State's 45.5. However Paul Quinn did manage to sink 16-19 free throws in the latter half of play, coming from 15 Bobcat fouls.
The largest lead for the Bobcats came at 3:09 in the second period. Gordon Taylor entered the game with a fresh face to drain a three-pointer to give Texas State a 26-point margin over Paul Quinn.
Five Bobcats finished in double figures for the win, with Brandon Bush trailing Sloan with 19 points for second best. Bush finished with a team-high 12 rebounds for an impressive back-to-back double-double performance.
Gough chipped in 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for a career-high four double-doubles on the season mark. Benson and Dylan Moseley chipped in 11 and ten, respectively in their off-the-bench marks to round out the Bobcat's season-high scoring performance.
As the Bobcats improve to 7-5 for the season, they will face the Broncs of Texas-Pan American to close out their non-conference slate. This will be the second meeting this season between the in-state rivals, as the Bobcats took a 102-75 win away from UTPA in Edinburg.
