T-Association to Induct 4 into Hall Next Week

SAN MARCOS - The T-Association will induct its 2007 Hall of Honor class next week in conjunction with the Bobcats' Thursday night game against intra-state rival Sam Houston State.

All four of this year's class members were football lettermen at Texas State, then known as Southwest Texas State University. The class includes Walter "Tommy" Cox (1969-71), Paul Phillips III (1973-77), Mike Wynn (1979-82) and Ken Huewitt (1980-83).

The four Hall of Honor inductees will be introduced at halftime of Texas State's football game against Sam Houston State next Thursday. On Friday the class will be officially inducted into the Hall during the annual Hall of Honor Induction Dinner in the Sac-N-Pac Room of Bobcat Stadium's End Zone Complex.

Below are biographies on all four inductees.

WALTER "TOMMY" COX
Tommy Cox earned three letters as a member of the Southwest Texas State football team. He started three years at linebacker, earning First-Team All-Lone Star Conference honors in 1971. He was a team captain on the 1971 Lone Star Conference Championship team under legendary coach Bill Miller.

Cox started his career as a teacher and coach at South San High School in 1972. He earned his Master of Education degree from Southwest Texas State in 1976. He was the head football coach at Travis High School in Austin for eight years, where he led the Rebels to two district championships and four state playoff appearances.

In 1987 Cox became the first head football coach and athletic coordinator at Austin Bowie High School. His teams there made eight trips to the state playoffs in his 14 year tenure. He had over 100 victories in his 22 years as a head football coach.

Cox has been a member of the Texas High School Coaches Association for 34 years and served on the board of directors (1994-1997). He helped establish Coaches Outreach, a ministry for coaches and their spouses that has over 200 Coaches Bible Studies in 3 states (Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas). He teaches a weekly Bible Study in Austin for retired coaches. Currently, Cox is the Athletic Director for Austin Independent School District, overseeing 11 high schools and 18 middle school athletic programs.

Tommy and his wife Brenda, also a SWT graduate and former Strutter, have been married for 36 years. They have two sons Garrett and Travis. Garrett graduated from the US Naval Academy and is a Captain in the US Marine Corps. He served two tours of duty in Iraq. Travis is a Plumbing Contractor and has two daughters.

PAUL PHILLIPS III
Paul Phillips III earned four letters as a member of the Southwest Texas State football team from 1973-1977 under coach Bill Miller. Phillips was named Lone Star Conference Freshman of the Year in 1973, and was twice named Honorable Mention All-Conference. He also earned Academic All-American honors twice, in 1974 and 1975. In 1976, he was named J.C. Kellam Outstanding Senior Football Player of the Year.

Also while at SWT, Phillips was a member of the Dean's List for seven semesters, a Gaillardian member in 1975, Vice President of UMOJA (SWTSU Black Student Association) from 1975 to 1976, a Member of Campus Crusade for Christ between 1974 and 1977, and a Leader for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes from 1975 to 1977.

After his senior season as captain of the football team, Phillips was invited as a free agent to attend the Baltimore Colts summer training camp in the summer of 1977. Phillips played one season in the National Football League with the Colts before moving onto a successful medical career as a physician and orthopedic/hand surgeon.

Phillips earned his Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio in 1986. He entered into his orthopedic surgery residency program at Martin Luther King, Jr./Drew Medical Center in Los Angeles, and was twice named as outstanding orthopedic resident at his hospitals. During his senior year of training at MLK/Drew he was commissioned as a Captain in the U.S. Army Reserves and is currently at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel with the 94th Combat Support Hospital out of Seagoville, Texas. He has been mobilized overseas in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraq Freedom four times since 2002 and has just recently completed fifth mobilization, taking him back to Iraq for his second tour there as an orthopedic surgeon, providing care to U.S. military, coalition members and Iraq civilians.

He is currently a physician and orthopedic/hand surgeon at Arlington Orthopedic Associates, where he has spent the last ten years. Paul and his wife Brenna, who is an Emergency Medicine Physician, have four children, Paul IV, Amy Noelle, Stephen Austin, and Jordan Lee. They reside in Arlington.

MIKE WYNN
Mike Wynn earned four letters as a member of the Southwest Texas football team from 1979-1982. Wynn played an integral part in the Bobcats' back-to-back Division II National Championships in 1981 and 1982. Wynn played in 50 straight games, setting an NCAA record, while starting in 44 of those contests. He served as team captain for the 1982 team that went 14-0 under legendary coach Jim Wacker.

Wynn was twice named Lone Star All-Conference Second Team, both in 1981 and 1982, and was also named Honorable Mention All-Conference in 1980. Wynn was a Second-Team Academic All-American in 1981 and 1982, as well as being named First-Team Academic All-Lone Star Conference in 1981 and 1982. His senior season Wynn received the J.C. Kellum outstanding senior football player award.

While at SWT, he was a member of the National Honor Society and was named Who's Who Among College Students. Wynn graduated from SWT with a Bachelor or Science with honors in chemistry and a minor in biology.

After graduation Wynn completed medical school at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston, completing his residency in Anesthesiology. He is currently president of Northwest Anesthesiology, P.A., in San Antonio.

Wynn and his with Karin have been married for 17 years, and have two boys Stern and Steve.

KEN HUEWITT
Ken Huewitt earned four letters as a member of the Southwest Texas football team from 1980-1983. Huewitt was a starter on the Bobcat's back-to-back Division II National Championships in 1981 and 1982 and was named a Lone Star Conference defensive player of the week in 1981.

After a brief stint with the Seattle Seahawks, Huewitt returned to San Marcos, graduated from Southwest Texas State University with a B.B.A. in Accounting, and began a long and successful career in the Audit and Financial industry.

Huewitt began his career as an auditor in the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's Office of Inspector General. He has had a variety of roles during his career including Senior Audit Specialist for the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), Senior Associate for Coopers & Lybrand, and Regional Director of Finance for the ServiceMaster Corporation.

Huewitt has served as the Controller for the Houston Independent School District the past six years. His duties range from developing sound accounting policies and procedures for the various district funds and accounts, to overseeing strategic operations, and managing the district's $1.5 billion annual operating budget.

Huewitt is a Certified Public Accountant, Certified Internal Auditor, Certified Government Financial Manager, and Certified Financial Services Auditor. He is a member of several organizations including the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants, National Association of Black Accountants, Institute of Internal Auditors and the NAACP. He is actively serving on the Board of Directors for Texas State University's T-Association and the Association for the Advancement of Mexican Americans (AAMA).

Huewitt married his college sweetheart, Pamela Elder, and they have two children, Hunter and Hailey.
