SAN MARCOS -
Brandon Thomas registered his second career double-double as the Bobcats defeated Huston-Tillotson 101-81 in both teams' season opener Friday.
Along with 15 points, Thomas had 11 rebounds and four steals off the Bench.
Both Brandon Bush and Dylan Moseley scored a team-high 17 points while Brent Benson finished with 14 and Matt Fullenwider scored 10.
Huston-Tillotson was led by K.C. Asomugha who finished with 24 points and 11 rebounds.
Texas State doubled up the Rams in the first half, building a 64-32 lead by the break. The Bobcats shot 57 percent from the field while holding HT to 23 percent shooting in the half, including a 1-for-13 performance from beyond the three-point line.
The first half also included 35 fouls, including 18 on the Bobcats, as well as 20 combined turnovers.
Huston-Tillotson scored the games' first points on a Asomugha three-pointer but junior point guard Corey Jefferson answered at the other end of the floor to start a 9-0 Bobcat run. After Benson drilled a three-pointer which put the Bobcats out in front 18-7 with 13:51 to play, Texas State's lead would never drop below double figures.
But HT made it interesting in the second half.
The Rams cut Texas State's lead to as few as 13 points on a Titus Butler jumper that narrowed the gap to 90-77 with 4:39 to play.
Bush would later go end to end for a layup to key an 8-1 run to put the game away.
Texas State continues its season-opening home stand Tuesday when the Bobcats play host to Dallas Baptist. Huston-Tillotson starts its season with six straight road games traveling next to Nicholls State on Tuesday.
