Battle on the Bend Final Results

MANY, La. - Texas State sophomore Michael Carnes shot a 73 on Tuesday to move into a tie for first place after 54 holes and won a scorecard playoff to capture medalist honors at the Third Annual Battle on the Bend.

Carnes began the day tied for fifth, six strokes back of second-round leader Devin Carrey, a member of the host Louisiana-Lafayette team. Carrey, who opened the tournament with a 66 on Sunday then shot a 73 Monday, was seven strokes over par Tuesday to fall into a tie with Carnes and Missouri-Kansas City's Stephen Clark.

Carnes remained in the top 10 throughout the tournament. He was tied for sixth after an opening-round 71 and shot a 74 on Tuesday. He finished with a three-round score of 218.

Clark and Carnes both shot 73 to eliminate Carrey out of the playoff determined by scorecards. Carnes 74 on Monday broke a tie with Clark.

"The conditions were really tough today," said Texas State coach Shane Howell. "Michael hit the ball solid all day. We figured the leaders would come back to him today. He stayed patient and stuck with his game plan."

In addition to Carnes, Texas State's Andrew Bryant also finished strong. After an opening-round 78, Bryan carded a 73 Monday before a two-under par 70 moved him into a tie for fourth in the final standings.

Despite the pair of strong individual performances Tuesday, Texas State shot a 302 after back-to-back rounds of 299 earlier in the week and finished fourth as a team with a 900. Sam Houston State won the team championship with an 887 while Louisiana-Lafayette was one stroke back. UMKC shot a three-round score of 895 to place third.

This week's tournament was the final event of the fall season. The Bobcats return to action Feb. 18-19 at the Roadrunner Intercollegiate in San Antonio.
