`Cats Spoil Nicholls' Senior Night with 3-1 win

THIBODAUX, La. - Jessica Weynand posted 17 kills to lead five Bobcats with at least nine kills, and Texas State hit .338 as a team to defeat Nicholls State 3-1 (30-25, 25-30, 30-19, 30-16) on the Lady Colonels' senior night.

Lawrencia Brown and Shelbi Irvin each recorded double-doubles to lead the Bobcats (15-10, 8-5 SLC) to their third-straight win while Nicholls State (8-21, 2-11 SLC) dropped its tenth match in a row.

The match started tight, with the teams tied at 19-19 before a 10-2 Bobcat run gave Texas State game point at 29-21. The Lady Colonels tried to mount a last-gasp comeback but came up short in losing 30-25.

Game two was knotted throughout as Nicholls State tried to avoid a 2-0 hole at home. Texas State would never lead in the game despite 12 ties, getting no closer than 19-17 before being on the other end of a 30-25 score.

Weynand and Amy Weigle helped Texas State gain the upper hand in the match with four kills apiece in a 30-19 game three win. The `Cats combined to hit .419 in the game with only two errors in 31 attacks, overcoming eight Chelsea Dockrey kills in the frame for Nicholls.

Brown then took over in game four with six kills and no errors in nine attacks while adding six digs, as Texas State cruised to a match-clinching 30-16 win in game four. She finished the match with 13 kills and 10 digs while Weigle, Melinda Cave and Emily Jones each had nine kills.

Shelbi Irvin had 29 assists to go along with a team-high 12 digs, while Jones led Texas State with five blocks at the net. As a team, the Bobcats out-hit Nicholls State .338-to-.190 thanks to 31 Lady Colonel attack errors.

A trio of Lady Colonels finished with at least 14 kills, including 15 from Rachel Spreen. Kindra Halverson had 14 kills while Dockrey added 14 kills and 13 digs. Amy Whitehead finished with a match-best 51 assists in running the Nicholls offense, while Enjoli Ford led all players with 21 digs.

The Bobcats face a quick turnaround with a 2 p.m. match at Southeastern Louisiana.
