Brandon Bush registered his first career double-double, scoring 23 points to go with 11 rebounds and Texas State survived a second-half Dallas Baptist run to beat the Patriots 99-84 Tuesday in Strahan Coliseum.
With the win, Texas State improved to 2-0 for the first time in five years. The Bobcats travel to Kennesaw State's 100 Club Classic later in the week. The `Cats open tournament play against Colgate Friday at 4 p.m. in Kennesaw, Ga.
Dallas Baptist is counting Tuesday's game as its third exhibition contest. The Patriots open their season Nov. 20 when they play host to Arkansas Tech.
DBU rallied from a 16-point, first-half deficit to lead 62-61 with 11:30 to play in the game. The Patriots put together a 7-0 run in the second half and took the lead on an Erik Villareal layup after he stole a pass in the backcourt. The two teams would trade baskets before Texas State stretched out the lead with nine unanswered points, capped by a Bush layin.
The Patriots would get to within three points in the final minutes before Brandon Thomas answered with a field goal at the 4:44 mark to make the score 77-72.
In the final minute Texas State went 7-for-8 from the line to wrap up the victory. For the game, the Bbocats were 32-of-47 from the free throw line.
Bush was 14-of-18 at the free throw line to go along with a 4-for-10 performance from the field. He also had two steals, an assist and blocked a shot.
Chris Agwumaro, Brent Holder and Thomas all finished with 12 points for Texas State.
Dallas Baptist was led by Braxton Adamson's 18-point performance off the bench. Villarreal chipped in 16 points as did Eddie Gloviak off the bench. Starting guard Nick Michels, who had averaged 23 points in the Patriots' first two exhibitions, was held to 14 points on 5-for-16 shooting. Michels also had 10 boards.
After flirting with the NCAA two-team record for fouls in a game in last year's inaugural series meeting, Texas State and Dallas Baptist combined for 61 personal fouls Tuesday (33 by DBU). Last year the two teams were whistled for a total of 81 fouls.
Texas State led 46-37 at the break but watched a 16-point advantage dissolve to single digits in the waning minutes of the period.
The Bobcats led 40-24 on an inside shot by Ty Gough with 3:51 to play in the period.
Dallas Baptist would score 11 unanswered points to cut Texas State's lead to 40-35 with 1:14 left in the half. The rally started with a three-pointer by Erik Villarreal and ended with the Patriots scoring off a pair of turnovers.
Texas State's lead was six, 43-37, on a late fastbreak layup by Brandon Wash. But at the other end Corey Jefferson was able to use a screen by Jonathan Sloan and drain a three-pointer at the buzzer to stretch the lead back out to nine.
