NACOGDOCHES -
Lawrencia Brown recorded 19 digs for the second night in a row, but Stephen F. Austin would not let the Bobcats spoil Senior Day as Texas State lost its regular season finale 3-0 (28-30, 17-30, 27-30) to the Ladyjacks.
The loss means the Bobcats (18-11, 10-6 SLC) will be the fifth seed in the 2007 Southland Conference Volleyball Tournament, which will be held November 16-18 in San Antonio. Stephen F. Austin (25-7, 15-1) earned a share of the regular season SLC title with its win but will be the No. 2 seed next weekend due to losing a tie-breaker against Lamar.
SFA jumped out to an 8-1 lead right out of the gates before the Bobcats came back to within a point at 22-21. After a quick 3-0 Ladyjack rally Texas State came back and tied it at 27-27, but a pair of Traci Rohde kills helped SFA to the 30-28 win.
Another deep hole to start game two put the `Cats down 12-3, but there would be no comeback as SFA maintained a double-digit lead after going up 15-5, leaving Texas State in a deep 2-0 hole at the midway point.
Texas State again fell behind early in game three by an 8-3 deficit that grew to 17-9. Down 21-10, the Bobcats mounted a 14-5 run to close the gap to two points at 26-24, but Rohde again came up with two kills down the stretch as SFA took game three 30-27 to complete the sweep.
Brown and Emily Jones each finished with nine kills to lead Texas State while Brittany Collins added 34 assists. Kacey Wimpy also finished the match with 17 digs to go along with Brown's performance in the back.
Rohde was the only player on either team with at least 10 kills, finishing with 20 kills and only two errors in 30 attempts, a .600 attack percentage. SFA also got a double-double from JJ Jones, who had 43 assists and 12 digs, while Jami Hill led all players with 24 digs.
Texas State will face McNeese State in next weekend's SLC Tournament, but the start time of the match has not yet been determined. Stephen F. Austin will also have to wait to find out both when and who it faces in its opening round match.
