Bobcats Take Care of Lady Demons 3-1

SAN MARCOS - After jumping out to a 2-0 lead, Texas State volleyball overcame a game three loss and a game four battle to close out its Southland Conference home schedule with a 3-1 (30-21, 30-22, 26-30, 30-28) win over Northwestern State on Saturday.

Jessica Weynand's 14 kills led Texas State (14-10, 7-5 SLC), who had all 14 players on the roster see action for the first time in the same match all season, while Talita Santos had a match-high 16 kills for Northwestern State (8-13, 4-8).

The `Cats opened game one with Shelbi Irvin serving five straight points, the third straight game Irvin accomplished the feat after doing it twice in Texas State's win over Central Arkansas. Although the Lady Demons closed within four at 14-10, the `Cats went on the offensive with a 10-4 run to extend the lead back out to six and cruised from there to take game one 30-21.

Northwestern State traded points with the Bobcats in game two before an 8-1 Texas State run broke a 7-7 tie. Amy Weigle's four kills in the frame paced another strong offensive showin, as the `Cats outhit the Lady Demons .220-to-.087 for the game to go up 2-0 at the half.

With the starters getting a breather in game three, Northwestern State staged a comeback with a 6-0 run that erased a 15-10 Bobcat lead. The Lady Demons held onto their one-point lead until a 5-1 run made it 25-21 Northwestern State. Kills by Emily Jones kill and Stephanie Puckett coupled with Lady Demon errors cut the lead to one at 27-26, but Santos recorded three straight kills for Northwestern State to claim game three for the Lady Demons.

In game four it was Texas State staging another late-game comeback after trailing 25-20 to the Lady Demons, but this time the Bobcats were able to overcome the deficit with an 8-2 run to hold a 28-27 lead. Another Santos kill tied it, but Lawrencia Brown answered with a kill before a Northwestern State attack error sealed the match as Texas State took game four 30-28.

Weynand also added 12 digs for her tenth double-double of the season, while Jones finished with 10 kills and a .500 hitting percentage to lead Texas State. Irvin had 29 assists and four aces while Brittany Collins added 20 assists. Four Bobcats had double-digit dig totals, led by Ally Buitron and Kacey Wimpy, who each tallied 13.

Santos was one of four Lady Demons with at least 10 kills, while Megan Dockery had 52 assists and 11 digs. Megan Manning led Northwestern State with 19 digs while Markie Robichau finished with 12 kills, 14 digs and five blocks.

The Bobcats continue their SLC schedule with another road trip east to take on Nicholls State and Southeastern Louisiana on Nov. 2 and 3 before heading back home for the regular season home finale on Nov. 6 against Texas-Pan American.
