LAKE CHARLES, LA. -
After a game four rally forced a deciding fifth game, Texas State's comeback bid fell short as the Bobcats dropped a 3-2 decision (30-18, 23-30, 19-30, 30-23, 9-15) at McNeese State on Saturday.
Amy Weigle led the Bobcats (12-9, 5-4 SLC) on offense with 15 kills and no errors in 23 attacks, a season-high .652 hitting percentage, but it wasn't enough to defeat the Cowgirls (12-11, 6-3 SLC), who extended their winning streak to four matches.
Game one started close, with the two teams tied at 17-17 before the Bobcats ran away thanks to a 12-0 run that included three Shelbi Irvin service aces, as Texas State took the opening frame 30-18.
The second game played out like game one, only this time the `Cats were on the wrong end of a 9-2 Cowgirl run that gave McNeese State a 27-19 lead they were able to close out with a 30-23 game two win and even the match at halfime.
The Cowgirls stayed hot out of the break, taking game three 30-19 and putting pressure on the Bobcats to keep the match alive. Texas State came back with a 30-23 win in game four, forcing the deciding game five.
McNeese scored the first five points in the race to 15, but the Bobcats trimmed the lead to 9-6. The `Cats would get no closer though, losing 15-9 and dropping their second straight match.
Weigle led four Bobcats with at least 12 kills, as Jessica Weynand and Lawrencia Brown posted double-doubles. Weynand finished with 12 kills and 14 digs while Brown added 13 kills and a team-high 17 digs.
McNeese State's Chanel Tyler led all players with 19 kills, and Jessica Strama finished with a match-high 27 digs.
The Bobcats will return to divisional play with a match Tuesday at Texas-Arlington slated for a 7 p.m. start.
