Final Stats
SAN MARCOS -
In Texas State's Southland Conference home opener, a trio of freshmen stole the show, putting up three first half goals and never looking back. Audra Randell and Anna Fagan notched their first career goals while Britney Curry added another to beat Sam Houston 3-0.
With the win, Texas State (3-8-1, 2-0-1 SLC) extended its shutout streak to four straight games, a span of nearly 400 minutes, while Sam Houston State (2-7-2, 0-2-0 SLC) fell to 1-8-0 in the all-time series between the teams.
Three minutes of play was all it took in Friday's match for Randell to post the first Bobcat score and her first career goal of the season. Nikki Kinard took Curry's pass and lofted a cross to Randell, who headed it in just inside the left post past Bearkat goalkeeper Jenny Pence.
Up 1-0, the freshman midfielder paid it forward in the 14th minute, finding Anna Fagan on a corner kick. Fagan punched it in, ending the play and posting her first career goal as well.
After a strong move against `Kats goalie Jenny Pence, Curry laid one into the net in the 22nd minute for what would ultimately be the final goal of the night.
The Bobcat defense had another stellar performance tonight, led by SLC player of the week Marty Wright. Only three of Sam Houston's 14 shots were on goal, and Bobcat goalies Mandi Mawyer and Amanda Byrd turned away each of them to extend Texas State's shutout streak.
The `Cats will continue their home stand against SLC leader Stephen F. Austin on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Bobcat Soccer Complex.
