Final Stats
SAN MARCOS -
After a slow start that forced the `Cats to have to rally for a game one win, Texas State volleyball used strong net play and 10 kills from Emily Jones to win 3-0 (34-32, 30-12, 30-21) Thursday in San Antonio.
Jones also had seven block assists, as the Bobcats (11-7, 4-2 SLC) tallied 14.5 blocks as a team and outhit UTSA (9-14, 1-5 SLC) .235 to .084, including a -.083 mark by the Roadrunners in game two and a .000 hitting percentage in game three.
A late rally in game one gave the `Cats an early edge. After trailing for almost the entire game and facing a 28-24 deficit, Emily Jones took over with three kills while UTSA struggled with errors on offense, giving Texas State new life by tying the game at 28-28. A quick Roadrunner kill still gave UTSA a serve for the game, but a ball handling error by Valerie Rogers gave the Bobcats new life. The error was one of four by UTSA to end game one, including the final two points of Texas State's 34-32 win.
Game two was all Bobcats after the teams traded the first few points of the game, as Texas State used an 11-3 run to break things open and stake an 18-9 lead. The Bobcats outhit UTSA .350 to -.083 in the game with Jones again leading the way for the game with four kills and three block assists.
After half time, Texas State jumped out to a 10-5 lead in game three before the Roadrunners came back to take a 17-14 lead of its own with a 12-4 run. Texas State then responded with a run of its own, outscoring UTSA 16-4 for the rest of the game, including seven straight UTSA errors, to win game three 30-21 and take the match.
Jones was the only Bobcat to reach double figures in kills, but Lawrencia Brown and Amy Weigle each had nine kills while Jessica Weynand added eight. Brittany Collins was the assist leader for the Bobcats, finishing with 21. Defensively, Kacey Wimpy led Texas State with 16 digs and Weynand added 13 while AJ Watlington had six blocks and Weigle five.
Kendra Rowland led UTSA with 14 kills, while also tallying 17 digs. Victoria Prior added 13 kills while Audrey Hiser had a match-high 19 digs.
