After getting off to a 2-0 start in Southland Conference play with a pair of home wins last week, Texas State's league record fell to .500 at 2-2 and 7-10 overall. Nicholls State won its second straight - the Colonels beat Texas-Arlington in overtime Thursday. NSU is now 3-15 and 2-2.
Texas State held a 40-37 lead at the break but a shooting slump that started midway through the second period ended the Bobcats' hopes of a road win.
Texas State led by as many as seven in the second period and the Bobcats' lead was six when Matt Fullenwider drained a quick three at the 10:02 mark. But leading 59-53, Texas State hit a cold spell that hit as quick as the front that raced into Central Texas on Saturday. The Bobcats made just two of their final 14 field goal attempts.
During a four-minute stretch Texas State missed four field goal attempts, the front end of a one-and-one and turned the ball over twice. During the same time frame Nicholls scored 10 unanswered points to take over a 63-59 lead.
The run saw the Colonels convert on four straight field goal attempts and they would close out the game by making their final seven shots. Adonis Gray scored 22 points to lead Nicholls while preseason first-team all-conference pick Stefan Blaszczynski added 15.
In addition to its shooting woes, Texas State also continued to struggle through foul problems. The Bobcats were whistled for 30 fouls. Brandon Thomas and Antwon Williams both fouled out of the game and three other players ended the game with four fouls apiece.
For the game, Texas State shot under 40 percent from the field. In addition to shooting 60 percent for the game, Nicholls outrebounded the Bobcats 45-25.
Dylan Moseley, who missed Thursday's game at Southeastern Louisiana after suffering a concussion the previous week, came off the bench to score a team-high 15 points for the Bobcats. Chris Agwumaro added 13 points off the bench while Matt Fullenwider finished with 12 points.
Texas State continues its current three-game road swing Thursday when the Bobcats take on league newcomer Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
