Texas State got 19 kills out of Lawrencia Brown and 11 digs from Kacey Wimpy, but the Bobcats could not survive a .615 hitting percentage and 17 kills from Anna Breyfogle in a 3-1 loss (30-25, 21-30, 19-30, 26-30) loss to Baylor at Strahan Coliseum.
Texas State (3-3) played in front of its largest crowd of the season, an audience of 1,157 that saw six Bobcats record at least eight digs in a four-game loss to the Bears. Baylor improved to 7-1 on the season with the win.
The Bobcats opened the match by scoring on four of the first five serves to jump out to a 4-1 lead, but Baylor would fire back to get within one at 9-8 on a Bobcat attacking error.
The Bears tied the match at 9-9 and completed a 4-0 run with another Texas State error to go up 12-9. Texas State fought back to get within one four times after the Bears took control, and after Brown put Texas State within one at 19-18, Baylor went on a 3-1 scoring clip to take a 22-19 lead which forced a Texas State time out.
Out of the break, Texas State got kills from Amy Weigle, Emily Jones and Brown to tie the game at 22-22, and Texas State followed by taking its first lead since 9-8 on a Baylor attacking error that made the score 23-22.
Baylor would break the 4-0 Bobcat spurt with a Texas State service error, but the Bears were unable to take advantage of the knotted score, allowing a 6-1 Texas State scoring drive that gave the `Cats game point at 29-23.
Texas State gave up a pair of Baylor points on the next two serves, but up 29-25, the Bobcats earned the game on a Bear serving error that ran the count to 30-25 and put Texas State up 1-0 in the match.
Baylor gained ground in game two, beating Texas State 30-21 to pull even in the match at 1-1. The Bears started with six of the first seven points and continued to add to the lead, going up by seven at 17-10 on a Lauren Keeton kill.
Texas State fought back, cutting the lead to four at 18-14 on a kill by Brown, but Baylor scored the next three points to go up 21-14 and the Bears closed the game by outscoring Texas State 9-7 to finish with the nine-point win.
Baylor would pull ahead 2-1 after the intermission, opening game three with points on the first two serves, and after Texas State got on the board with a Bear service error, Baylor's Desiree Gulliard-Young blasted a pair of kills to put the Bears up 4-1.
The Bears would later extend the lead to 9-4, and after the lead grew to 13-8, Baylor used a 3-0 clip to go up 16-8 with three-straight kills. Texas State got a pair of kills to get back within six at 16-10, but a Bear run of 4-1 got Baylor over the 20-point barrier and the Bears finished by outscoring Texas State 10-7 to win 30-19.
The Bobcats started game four by earning points on four of the first five serves to take a 4-1 lead, but a blast by Gulliard-Young and a kill by Anna Breyfogle put Baylor within one at 4-3.
Baylor tied the game with its fourth point on a Bobcat attacking error and an ace put the Bears on top 5-4. The next six serves saw the teams trade points to an 8-8 tie, but Texas State would force a Baylor time out with a 3-0 run that made the score 11-8.
Out of the break, Baylor notched two points to get within one at 11-10, and a Bobcat attacking error re-tied the game at 11-11. The run continued with a kill that gave Baylor a 12-11 lead, and the scoring clip culminated at 5-0 with a point that put Baylor up 13-11.
Texas State fired back to tie the game at 13-13, but three straight Baylor scores erased the tie and put the Bears up 16-13 at the game's mid-way point, forcing a Bobcat time out.
The Baylor lead grew to 20-14 out of the Texas State pause in play, and despite Texas State getting to within three at 23-20, Baylor closed the match with seven of the last 14 points to secure the 30-26 game-four win and the 3-1 match victory.
Texas State continues its season Friday with nationally ranked UCLA in the Denver Invitational, and the Bobcats conclude weekend play in the Rocky Mountains with matches Saturday against Georgia and the hosting Denver Pioneers.
