Amy Weigle and Lawrencia Brown had 16 kills each to lead four Bobcats in double figures, as Texas State evened its Southland Conference record with a 3-1 win (33-35, 30-22, 31-29, 31-29) Friday at Sam Houston State.
Texas State (5-11, 1-1) also got double-digit outings out of Kelly Fletcher (15) and Karry Griffin (10), while Erin Hickman passed out 63 assists and Kacey Wimpy had 24 digs, a career high. Griffin, Fletcher and Brown also posted double-digit numbers in the digs column to complete double-doubles in the match.
Sam Houston State (6-7, 1-2) fell despite four players in double figures, including a match-high 17 from Lindsey Roebken and 34 digs from Melissa Sims.
The Bearkats rolled off seven-straight points to take a 7-1 lead in game one, but a 10-4 Bobcat rally tied the game at 11-11. Texas State fought back for four more ties, but the Bobcats could not manage to grab a lead, losing the opening game 35-33.
Texas State recovered to take a 13-9 lead in game two, and after a Bearkat rally tied the game at 14-14, Fletcher gave Texas State the lead with back-to-back kills that put the `Cats on top 16-14.
The `Cats scored the next two points to go up 18-14, and despite a second Bearkat rally shaved the lead to 22-20, the Bobcats finished on an 8-2 run to win 30-22.
Sam Houston fought to an early game-three advantage, earning the three-point lead on a Yarotsky kill that made the score 14-11. A 6-3 Texas State spurt tied the game at 17-17, and the Bobcats would regain the lead at 25-24 after tying the score at 24-all on a Bearkat service error.
Texas State would later go up 29-26 with a kill by Brown, and after a 3-0 Bearkat rally took game point way from the `Cats, Texas State got the final two points on a Weigle kill and a Sam Houston error to go up 2-1 with a 31-29 win.
Back-to-back Hickman service aces put Texas State on top 13-9 in game four, but back-to-back Roebken kills tied the game at 17-17 ten serves later. Texas State got the next three points to go up 20-17, and the `Cats outscored Sam Houston 6-5 over the next 11 balls to take a four-point advantage at 26-22.
Sam Houston notched the next three points to get within one at 26-25, and an Anna Ferguson kill tied the game at 29-29 for the Bearkats, taking away game-point for the second-straight frame for Texas State. The Bobcats responded, however, just as they did in game three, getting a Bearkat error and a kill, this time by Brown, to win 31-29 in the game at 3-1.
The `Cats hit .195 in the match and held Sam Houston to .158 hitting, while Texas State outblocked the Bearkats 12-9, including one solo block and six assisted blocks from Weigle to lead the Bobcat front line.. In all, five `Cats reached double-figures in points, led by Weigle's 20 in the win.
Texas State continues Southland play Saturday, taking on Stephen F. Austin at 4 p.m. in Nacogdoches.
