Texas State women's soccer opened its conference season by battling to a 2-2 draw with UTSA in the Roadrunner's first-ever Southland Conference game and the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
Freshman Whitney Bible's first goal as a Bobcat tied the game at 2-2 in the 87th minute to send the game to extra frames. Senior Elyse Ehlinger delivered a perfect one-touch pass on the play that left Bible open to beat UTSA goalkeeper Rachel Francis, the SLC leader in saves.
The Bobcats (1-8-1) ended a six-game losing streak that occurred during a brutal non-conference schedule. The tie gives both the `Cats and UTSA (3-7-1) one point in the Southland standings as the two teams start fresh with clean conference slates at 0-0-1.
Texas State led 1-0 at the half thanks to freshman Lindsay Tippit's goal in the fifth minute and more great passing. Senior Delayna Spivey and freshman Andrea Seledee worked to set Tippit up at the top of the box where the freshman connected to become the first multiple-goal scorer for the Bobcats in 2006.
UTSA came back strong before the home crowd, scoring two second-half goals to take a 2-1 lead. Chelsea Pack headed in a rebound to tie the game in the 75th minute. The Roadrunners' second goal came via a penalty kick when Kari Weiland beat Bobcat freshman goalie Samantha Fraser. It was the second time in three games a Bobcat opponent has been awarded with and converted on a penalty kick.
Texas State's defense held strong to help prevent further damage. Twice the Roadrunner attack released a flurry of shots, but both times Fraser and the entire back line held strong. On separate occasions sophomore Marty Wright and senior Kristy Collison proved to be the last line of defense as each player recorded team saves after rebounds had taken Fraser out of the play and left the goal exposed.
The Bobcats will now continue the conference season by traveling to Huntsville to take on rival Sam Houston State on Sunday, Oct. 1, at 1 p.m. UTSA will also play Sunday afternoon at Stephen F. Austin.
