Volleyball Topped in Four by UTA

ARLINGTON - Texas State took a 32-30 game-one win but UTA rallied from one-down to beat the Bobcats 3-1 in the Southland opener for both schools Saturday at Texas Hall.

Texas State (3-11, 0-1) fell for the ninth-straight time, while UTA (12-5, 1-0) won its third straight to climb atop the SLC standings.

Lawrencia Brown had 18 kills to lead Texas State, while Arlington-native Amy Weigle also finished in double-digits with ten kills in the loss. Kacey Wimpy led the `Cats defensively with 23 digs, while Brown completed a double-double with 19 defensive marks in the match.

Teena Sobczak led UTA offensively with 23 kills, while the Mav defense was paced by Ashley Smith's 27 digs.

UTA grabbed an early 13-8 lead in game one before Texas State rallied with a 7-2 run to tie the game at 15-15. Texas State would then rattle off the next four points to go up 19-15, but UTA fired back to tie the game at 27-27 before Texas State claimed five of the final eight points to win 32-30.

The Mavericks punched in the first four points of the second game and despite a Texas State rally, UTA maintained a 10-9 lead 13 serves later.

The Bobcats would go on top 15-14 at the mid-point, but UTA regained the lead and went up 25-21 with an 11-6 run. Texas State would fight back into the game by tying the score at 29-29, but UTA outlasted the `Cats past 30 points to win 36-34 in Texas State's longest game this season.

In game three, UTA blasted out to a 9-1 lead which became 15-9 midway through the game, and the Mavs raced to the finish, winning the third game 30-17 to go up 2-1.

UTA finished the match despite Texas State leading late in game four, as the Mavericks erased a 26-22 Bobcat lead to win 30-27 in the game and 3-1 in the match.

Texas State returns home for its final non-conference match Wednesday, taking on Texas Southern at 7 p.m. inside Strahan Coliseum.
