SAN MARCOS - Samantha Conn's penalty kick goal in the 82nd minute broke a 0-0 tie and gave Rice a 1-0 lead they were able to keep to earn a victory over the Bobcats Friday night before a crowd of 841 at the Bobcat Soccer Complex.

The penalty kick was called when senior Kristy Collison was whistled for a foul inside the goalie box on a sliding tackle. Despite protest from the Texas State players, Conn went bottom left corner to beat Bobcat freshman goalie Samantha Fraser for the goal.

The win improves Rice to 8-0-1 and keeps their program-best undefeated streak to open a season alive. The Bobcats fell to 1-7 overall and 0-4 against teams from the 2005 Women's College Cup field in giving the Owls all they could handle.

Despite being out-shot for the game 20-10, Texas State trailed Rice just 5-3 in shots on goal. Rice's defense stayed strong the entire game, helped by three saves by McClintock, in keeping the Bobcats off the scoreboard and earning their sixth straight shutout.

The crowd tried to keep the Bobcats strong but could only watch as Collison sent a long shot off a free kick wide left as time expired. The 841 in attendance marked the second largest crowd in Bobcat Soccer Complex history, behind only the 1,176 who attended the Bobcats' last home game on Sept. 1 of this season against Centenary.

Both teams will now head to Houston as Rice heads home to play Central Florida on Sept. 29 and the Bobcats face the University of Houston Cougars on Sunday, Sept. 24, at 1:00 p.m.
