Volleyball Swept by Texas Tech in Edinburg

EDINBURG - Kacey Wimpy had 14 digs and Lawrencia Brown posted 18 kills, but Texas State was unable to match a .302 hitting percentage and ten Red Raider blocks in a 3-0 (25-30, 27-30, 22-30) loss to Texas Tech in Edinburg.

Texas State (3-3) fell by way of a shut-out for the third time this season, while Texas Tech (3-2) moved above .500 thanks in part to a pair of players with double-digit kills.

The teams opened game one at a 7-7 tie through 14 serves in game one, but Texas State used a 10-3 run over the next 13 balls, culminating with an Amy Weigle kill that put the Bobcats up 17-10.

A 5-2 Red Raider run made the score 19-15, and over the next 13 serves, Texas Tech scored eight points to get within one at 24-23. Brown put Texas State up 25-23 with a kill on the next ball, but the point would be Texas State's last of the game, as the Red Raiders notched the final seven points to win 30-25.

Game two began with Tech racing to a 10-6 lead, and despite Texas State being within one point on seven times in the game, the Bobcats never led, as the Red Raiders took a 30-27 game-two win to go up 2-0 in the match.

Texas Tech finished the match sweep with an eight-point game-three win, despite the game starting close and remaining tight until its final points.

Texas State grabbed an early 4-3 lead and again held the advantage at 5-4, but two-straight Texas Tech points made the score 6-5 and the Raiders did not surrender the for the remainder of the game.

Texas Tech went up 20-15 on back-to-back service aces that forced a Bobcat time out, and the Raiders outscored Texas State 10-7 to finish the game with a 30-22 win and a sweep in the match.

Christina Melvin led the Bobcats for the second-straight game with 34 assists, while Danna Melito added to the Bobcat defense with eight digs.

Philister Sang (14 kills) and Laura Gottschalk (11 kills) led the Red Raider offense, while Jenn Harrell's 17 digs led the Texas Tech back line in the win.

Texas State returns to the court Tuesday, when the Bobcats play their second-straight Big 12 opponent in a 7 p.m. match against Baylor at Strahan Coliseum. Prior to the match, Texas State will unveil its 2005 Southland Conference Tournament championship banner and its NCAA Tournament appearance banner.
