Lawrencia Brown produced 16 kills and Jessica Weynand had a career-best 12, but Texas State was unable to overcome a .128 team hitting percentage and 14 service errors in a 3-0 loss (30-27, 30-26, 30-18) to Houston Friday in the SLC/C-USA Challenge at Hoffheinz Pavillion.
Kacey Wimpy led Texas State (3-9) with 11 digs from the backline, while Houston (8-6) was led by Justine Farmer's second double-digit outing of the day, producing 15 digs in the match.
The Bobcats scored four of the first five points in the match to open game one with a 4-1 lead, and Texas State continued to pile on to the lead, as back-to-back kills by Brown put the Bobcats up 16-10 midway through the game.
Houston would get the next five scores to cut the lead to one at 16-15, and despite another mini-run by Texas State, the Cougars managed to tie the game at 20-20 on a kill by Farmer.
Texas State regained the lead with three of the next four points to go up 23-21, but Houston tied the game at 23-23 with back-to-back points, and the Cougars finished with seven of the final 11 points to come away with a 30-27 opening-game victory.
The Bobcats again opened game two with a big lead, taking an early 8-1 advantage, a run that included three kills by senior Karry Griffin.
Houston climbed back to within five at 12-7 on another kill by Farmer, and after back-to-back Bobcat scores put Texas State up 17-12, UH went on an 8-5 scoring run to get within two at 22-20. Texas State would score only four more points over the final 14 serves, as Houston raced to a 30-26 win with a game-closing 10-4 run.
The Cougars completed the three-game sweep by going up 4-1 early in game three, and UH managed to moved the lead to ten points at 17-7 and 18-8. Texas State would fight back to within single digits, closing the gap to eight points at 25-17, but UH finished on a 5-1 run to win the game and the match with the 30-18 victory.
Texas State once again saw two setters lead the Bobcats up front, as Brittany Collins led the way with 17 assists and Christina Melvin passed out 17, while Griffin had four assisted blocks in the Bobcats' ninth loss of the season.
Weynand added to her career-night with a solo block and a pair of assisted stuffs to post a career-best 14 points, while Brown led all scorers with 17 points scored in the match.
Texas State continues play in the Challenge Saturday morning, taking on UTEP at 11 a.m. in Houston's Hoffheinz Pavillion.
