Sept. 13, 2006

Box Score

FORT WORTH - Lawrencia Brown had 11 kills and Texas State outdid TCU 6-4 at the net, but the Bobcats were unable to overcome a three-player TCU scoring burst in a 3-0 loss to TCU Wednesday in Fort Worth.

Texas State (3-8) fell 30-24, 30-17, 30-25 in its sixth-straight loss, while TCU (11-2) saw three players reach double-digit kills, led by LeMeita Smith's 12 and Lauren Otto's 11. Anna Vaughn rounded out the Horned Frogs' double-figure slate with ten kills in the win.

Game one began with a pair of opening points for TCU, and after a brief Bobcat lead at 4-3, the Frogs tied the game with a kill and took the lead with a service ace to make the score 5-4. TCU would allow only one more tying point by the Bobcats, who knotted the count at 10-10 on a TCU service ace.

TCU got the next two points and despite Texas State climbing to within one three more times, TCU used a pair of 4-0 runs to cement the six-point opening victory.

The Frogs jumped out to a three-point lead with four of the first five game-two points, and the lead continued to grow, moving to double digits at 21-11 and all the way to 13 points at 27-14. Texas State cut the Horned Frog lead to 28-17 on a Horned Frog attacking error, but TCU got the final two points to win 30-17.

Game three remained tight until a TCU run broke a 7-7 tie and allowed the Frogs to extend a four-point lead at 11-7. An Emily Jones kill got Texas State back to within three at 13-10, but another pair of back-to-back Frog scores extended the lead to 15-10 and forced a Bobcat time out.

Texas State scored three of the first four points out of the break to cut the Frog lead to 16-13, but yet another TCU run, this time a 4-2 clip, put the Frogs up 20-15. Texas State responded to the TCU scoring burst with one of its own, posting six of the next seven points to tie the game at 21-21, but TCU managed to outscore the Bobcats 9-4 over the final 13 serves to win 30-25.

Christina Melvin led the Bobcats from the setting position with 15 assists while Danna Melito led the defense with eight digs, and up front, Karry Griffin combined with Jones and Brown for eight assisted blocks. Kelly Fletcher had the `Cats only solo stuff on the night, while Brown (12.0) and Jones (7.0) were Texas State's scoring leaders in the loss.

Texas State returns to action Friday at 8 p.m. in Houston, as the `Cats open play in the C-USA/SLC Challenge hosted by the University of Houston. The Bobcats and Cougars tangle Friday night before Texas State takes on UTEP at 11 a.m. the following morning.

The Bobcats will then take a week-long breather before opening SLC play Saturday, Sept. 23, at Texas-Arlington.
