Kelly Fletcher had 13 kills and was named to the 2006 Pioneer Classic all-tournament team, but Texas State could not survive 14 kills from Maria Taylor and 11 team blocks for Georgia in a straight-game loss to the Bulldogs Saturday in Denver.
Texas State (3-7) finished the tournament with an 0-3 mark, while Georgia (4-6) got their first win in Denver in the tournament finale for both squads.
The Bobcats grabbed an early 2-1 lead with a pair of early Lawrencia Brown kills, but Georgia launched an offensive attack that enabled the Bulldogs to grab the lead and stretch it to as many as eight at 16-8 in game one.
Texas State fought back, sticking the Bulldogs on 23 points for seven-straight serves, erasing a 23-16 deficit and getting to within one at 23-22. With the score tied at 28-28, Fletcher pounded down a kill that gave Texas State a 29-28 lead, but the Bulldogs scored on the game's final two serves to win 31-29 and go up 1-0 in the match.
In game two, Texas State held a 16-13 lead mid-way through, but Georgia used a 14-7 run to take a 27-24 lead, and the Bulldogs finished on a 3-2 run to win 30-26 for a 2-0 lead in the match.
Despite Texas State grabbing two points in the first two serves of game three, Georgia managed to put the match away by starting with ten points in the first 15 balls played for an early 10-5 lead in the third and decisive game.
Texas State would fight back to a 17-17 tie with a 12-7 scoring clip, but the Bulldogs finished on a 13-7 run to end the game at 30-24. The game-three victory earned the Bulldogs a three-game sweep, which was the second of the day suffered by the Bobcats who also lost 3-0 to tournament host Denver.
Fletcher led the `Cats with 13 kills while Melvin had 18 digs, and the Bobcat defense was sparked by eight digs from Kacey Wimpy. Brittany Collins also added to the Bobcat attack, producing 16 assists in the three-game loss.
Texas State continues the season Wednesday in Fort Worth, when the Bobcats travel to TCU for a 7 p.m. match against the Horned Frogs.
