A flurry of second half shot attempts, including two off the post in a span of under two minutes, came up empty for the Bobcats as North Texas preserved a 2-1 half time lead into victory Sunday afternoon at the Bobcat Soccer Complex.
Senior Delayna Spivey did score the first goal of the `Cats season in the 26th minute when she got her head on a Rikki Padia corner kick to tie the game at one. However, the Mean Green took the lead for good on Kendall Juett's goal off a corner kick in the 40th minute.
Heather Hutyra also added a goal for North Texas, who out shot the Bobcats 21-10 for the game. However, Texas State edged the Mean Green in shots for the second half by a 7-6 margin.
In the 65th minute senior Kim Phillips hit the post, but the Bobcats worked their way into a corner kick. On the ensuing play, senior Natalie Holder became the second Bobcat in under two minutes to hit a shot off the post, and freshman Nikki Kinard's put back attempt was blocked. Phillips also had another chance to score on a breakaway in the 73rd minute, but the shot went just wide right.
Senior Brittany Beltramini took the hard luck loss for the Bobcats to fall to 0-2 on the year, while North Texas' Kandice Ellis was credited with the win in the Mean Green's first regular season game of the season.
The Bobcats will continue their home stand with a match on Friday, Sept. 1, against Centenary. Kick off is schedule for 7:30 p.m.
