Texas State saw its season-opening winning streak snapped, as the Bobcats fell to the 14th-ranked USC Women of Troy (30-18, 30-14, 30-14) Saturday at the CenturyTel Premier at Strahan Coliseum.
USC (3-0) got 13 kills apiece from Jessica Gysin and Asia Kaczor, and Diane Copenhagen added 12 kills to complete USC's double-figure colimn. Libero Debora Seilhamer recorded 24 digs for the Women of Troy, who did not drop a game in three matches this weekend.-
Laurencia Brown led the Bobcats (2-1) in kills for the third consecutive match, notching eight, while Brittany Collins dished out 21 assists in her second collegiate start. Freshman libero Kacey Wimpy led the team with 14 digs, marking her second double-digit outing of the tournament and establishing a new career-high.
The Bobcats did not appear to be intimidated by their ranked opponents as the first game got underway. Spurred on by the largest volleyball crowd of the season, the `Cats matched the Women of Troy point-for-point as Texas State took an early 10-9 lead.
The lead would not last as the Women of Troy took control of the game. USC scored the next six points, including five kills by Gysin, to take a 15-10 lead.
After another even exchange of points made the score 23-17, the Women of Troy used another 6-0 run to bring up game point. A kill by Fletcher stopped the rally, but one play later Gysin recorded her ninth kill of the game to give USC the 30-18 win.
Gysin finished the first game with a .529 hitting percentage and Seilhamer added nine digs.
The Women of Troy picked up right where they left off after the teams switched sides, establishing a 9-3 lead to begin the second game, followed by a 10-3 run to establish a commanding 19-6 lead en route to the 30-14 win.
The Trojan women controlled the third game just as they did during the first two contests, usinig a 6-0 run and three 4-0 runs to establish their largest lead of the game at 25-9. The 16-point lead was matched as they clinched the third game 30-14.
The Bobcats conclude the CenturyTel Premier with a match against the Mean Green of the University of North Texas. First serve is slated for 7 p.m.
