Lawrencia Brown posted 17 kills and Kacey Wimpy had 12 digs in her Bobcat debut, as Texas State knocked off Texas-Pan American (30-25, 30-26, 30-28) in the Bobcats' Season opener at the CenturyTel Premier in San Marcos.
Texas State (1-0) also got 30 assists from senior setter Christina Melvin, while Texas-Pan American (0-1) was led by Heather Bravo's double-double 12 kills and 12 digs. Chrissie Carrigan had 16 digs for the Broncs in the loss.
Texas State opened the match with four straight points in game one thanks to one UTPA error, an Ashley Stark ace and a pair of Brown kills, but the lead was quickly dissolved by four quick Bronc points that tied the game at 4-4.
UTPA gained its only lead of the game at 6-5 on a Monique Schaal kill, but Texas State raced back to a 10-7 lead with a 5-1 run that saw Brown card an ace and a kill to go with two UTPA errors.
The Broncs again tied the game at 10-10 and 13-13, but Texas State took control of the lead for the game's remainder, using an 9-3 run that included two kills each for Brown, Kelly Fletcher and Amy Weigle to put the Bobcats up 22-16.
Despite being outscored 9-8 over the game's final serves, the Bobcats slammed home the game's final two points to win 30-25.
Texas State opened game two with a 4-1 lead but had the advantage erased, as UTPA rallied to go up 12-8. The Broncs held the lead for eight more serves, but back-to-back UTPA errors put Texas State up 15-14.
The Bobcats capitalized on the lead, sparking an 8-4 run to go up 23-18. The Bobcats again had to hold off a Pan American rally, scoring the final two points on an error and an Emily Jones kill to win the game 30-26.
Texas State scored the first points early in the third game but UTPA managed to mount a comeback and take an 11-9 lead. The lead held until Texas State tied the game at 12-12, and the Bobcats carded the next four points after tying the score to go up 16-12.
The Bobcats expanded the lead to 26-19, but the Broncs jumped back into the game with a 6-0 run that cut Texas State's lead to 26-25. UTPA would again get within one at 28-27, but Texas State finished with two of the game's final three points to win 30-28 and complete the three-game sweep.
Texas State will continue tournament play tonight against Wyoming, with first serve slated for 5 p.m. at Strahan Coliseum.
