Preston Clark's eighth-inning RBI single snapped a 1-1 tie, and Longhorn reliever Joseph Krebs pitched a perfect ninth as No. 7 Texas downed Texas State 2-1 Tuesday at Disch-Falk Field in Austin.
Texas (33-15) benefited from a 2-for-3 Bradley Suttle outing, while Cody Merrell finished with Texas State's lone RBI in a 2-for-4 plate performance. Kyle Jones scored the only Bobcat run, as Texas State fell to 24-25 on the season.
Texas State jumped on top to begin the game, when Jones drew a one out walk in the first and was doubled home on a two-out pitch by Merrell to take a 1-0 lead.
The Longhorns leveled the score in the fourth, as Carson Kainer singled to lead off the inning and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. After reaching third on a wild pitch, Kainer crossed on Suttle's one-out RBI single that made the score 1-1.
The game would remain knotted until the bottom of the eighth, when with two outs, Suttle ripped a two-strike double to the left field wall.
Clark put Texas on top, 2-1, singling to Jones in left. Jones fired to the plate, but Suttle managed to slide past Bobcat catcher Dawid Bednarek, who had the ball pop out of his glove on the play.
Krebs came on to close the game and fanned the first two ninth-inning Bobcat batters looking, and after six pitches to Thomas Field, Krebs carded his third ninth-inning strike out to ice the one-run win.
The Bobcats used seven pitchers in the contest, including Justin Fiske who gave up the game-winning Longhorn run to fall to 2-5.
Texas reliever Keith Shinaberry tossed the eighth to get the Longhorn win, improving his mark to 2-0, while Krebs posted his second save of the season.
On the night, Texas State pitchers fanned ten Longhorn batters, while the `Horns left ten on base in the win. The Bobcats turned in two double plays in the losing effort while stranding eight base runners.
Texas State will take the weekend off from Southland play for final exams, and the Bobcats return to the field Tuesday in a 7 p.m. game at Baylor, Texas State's final non-conference game of the year.
The Bobcats close conference play with five of their last six at Bobcat Field, including a three-game series with Texas-Arlington and a three-game split series with Texas-San Antonio.
