Box Score

SAN MARCOS - Kyle Jones and Luke Cannon both homered and posted two RBIs, but Texas State was unable to overcome nine walks and a six-run eighth in a 7-5 loss Friday to Texas-Arlington.

Texas State (24-27, 16-9 SLC) gave up five of its nine staff walks in the eighth, as Texas-Arlington (23-29, 16-10) moved to within half of a game of the now-fourth place Bobcats in the SLC standings.

The Bobcats started scoring in the game in the first, as Cassidy Dresch reached on a lead-off walk before Jones belted his second home run of the season to left field, putting Texas State up 2-0.

Texas State added to its lead in the third, as Dresch again reached to lead off the inning, this time on a throwing error by UTA shortstop Kyle Rudy, enabling Dresch to reach second.

Jones produced a bunt single to move Dresch to third, and Cannon lifted a deep fly ball into center, scoring Dresch to make the score 3-0.

The game stayed run-less until the seventh, when Robby Winn led off the inning with a solo homer to slice Texas State's lead to 3-1.

The Mavericks' game-altering rally came in the eighth, as 11 batters saw the plate and six scored, putting UTA up 7-3.

Daniel Rieder and Adam Moore each homered in the inning, while Rudy laced a two-RBI double that provided UTA with its last two runs that proved to be game-winning scores.

Texas State fired back in its half of the eighth, beginning with Cannon's opposite-field solo shot that was followed by singles from David Wood and Aaron Garza.

Wood cut UTA's lead to 7-5 one batter later, as Dawid Bednarek singled to center, plating Wood from third.

After two quick ninth-inning outs, Jones singled to center, but Cannon was unable to pick up his third RBI of the game, grounding out to third to end the contest in the two-run loss.

Jones finished the day 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Cannon ended the game 1-for-3 with two RBIs and one trip across the plate. Wood also produced two hits in the game for Texas State, finishing the day 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Scott Moore, who took the loss for the `Cats and fell to 8-4 on the year, struck out eight batters, moving his season total to 106, marking the first Bobcat pitcher to top 100 strike outs since Bobby Sawicki fanned 124 in the 2002 season. Moore stands alone in third in the single-season record book.

Dillon Gee picked up the win for UTA, tossing 7.2 with five K's, and Chris Taylor recorded his sixth save of the year by throwing the final 1.1 for the Mavs.

Winn finished 3-for-4 to lead UTA at the plate, while Rudy, Rieder and Moore each finished with two RBIs.
