NEW YORK -
Texas State defensive tackle Fred Evans was selected by the Miami Dolphins Sunday in the seventh round of the NFL draft in New York City.
Evans, a two-year letterwinner for the Bobcats, was named the 212th overall pick in the draft, marking the first Bobcat player since the 2002 season to be drafted into the NFL.
"I really feel like there's a good connection for me with the Dolphins, especially with Coach (Nick) Saban and Coach (Dan) Quinn, my position coach," Evans said. "They've got great chemistry there, and if there was one team I really felt comfortable with it was Miami."
Evans, who was one of two Bobcat players to be selected to the 2006 Hula Bowl, registered 11.5 quarterback sacks and a total 35.5 tackles for loss during two-year career with the Bobcats.
Evans received individual accolades from the Southland Conference to culminate both his junior and senior seasons, as he was named the Southland Conference's newcomer of the year after his junior season and the league's Defensive Player of the Year as a senior.
In addition to SLC honors, was named to the American Football Coaches Association's All-America team and was a third-team selection on The Sports Network All-America squad.
Evans was named to the 2005 Don Hansen's Football Gazette NCAA I-AA Southwest All-Region team as well as honored as a selection to the publication's All-America Second Team. In addition to his accomplishments on the field, Evans is an Oak Farms Dairy Academic Award recipient at Texas State.
"It's great for Fred and for our program. Miami showed a lot of interest in Fred prior to the draft, and he was really excited when his name flashed on that board," head football coach David Bailiff said. "It's good for our program because it's publicity for us graduating players and seeing them on to the next level."
Evans was one of two defensive tackles taken in the seventh round by Miami, as the Dolphins also selected Texas defensive tackle Rodrique Wright with the 226th overall pick.
Texas State had 27 seniors on its 2005 NCAA Division I-AA semifinal squad, and the Bobcats will open play in the 2006 season against Tarleton State on Sept. 2, at Bobcat Field in San Marcos.
